Online calculator for calculating ideal weight using advanced formulas, taking into account age and body type

Health

We all want to be perfect. At least, we constantly strive for this. But here we are standing near the mirror, and it does not reflect the person we would like to see. Oh, these mirrors! Here the arms are thin, there the butt is fat. And only dark thoughts come to mind. I'm not perfect. And what will the scales show us? Uh...something is wrong here. What is my ideal weight, I need to know in order to strive for it!

How to calculate your ideal weight: formula

Photo
The World Health Organization in its research uses a calculation developed in the first half of the 19th century by the Belgian mathematician Adolphe Quetelet.

It is simple and takes into account only two factors: mass and height. According to him, you can calculate your ideal weight using a formula where the mass is divided by the height, previously squared. The first indicator is measured in kilograms, the second in meters.

The result obtained is checked against the data in the table, from which both the norm and possible deviations can be determined.

BMI according to Quetelet Correspondence between weight and height
Less than 16 Severe weight deficiency, exhaustion of the body
16-18,5 Underweight
18,5-24,9 Norm
25-29,9 Overweight (pre-obesity stage)
30-34,9 Obesity 1st degree
35-39,9 Obesity 2 degrees
More than 40 Obesity 3 degrees

Despite the fact that this excess weight formula is actively used in medicine, it does not take into account a number of factors that have a direct impact on changes in body weight.

This is far from the only calculation method. In our online calculator, you can calculate the indicator using other formulas, which you can also rely on when assessing how optimal the number that appears on the scale is.

Calculating ideal body weight for women

Photo
Normal weight indicators for men and women are different. This is primarily due to the different ratio of fat and muscle tissue. Since the cells of the first (adipocytes) are closely related to the functioning of the reproductive system, the percentage of fat in women is higher.

A person’s age also has an impact, because over time, muscles “shrink,” the number of adipocytes in the body increases, and metabolic processes gradually slow down.

Ideal body weight for women can be calculated in several ways. One of these methods takes into account not only external parameters, but also age:

50 + 0.75 * (height – 150) + (age – 20) / 4.

This calculation is used mainly for the weaker sex. Its main disadvantage is considered to be the lack of consideration of body type. One of the advantages is taking into account the age factor.

You can also determine your ideal weight using the Nagler formula.

Its essence is simple:

  1. It is taken for granted that a woman’s height of 152 cm corresponds to 45 kg.
  2. For every next 5 cm, it adds 900 g, that is, approximately 180 g per 1 cm.
  3. The final part of the formula is adding 10% of the result obtained to the found weight indicator.

However, the task can be simplified. You can calculate excess weight using calculators. Such services take into account both a minimum set of data (height and weight) and additional factors (age, physique).

Correctly calculate your ideal weight, men

For men, in most cases the same methods can be used. However, to obtain a more accurate result, the calculation method must take into account the physique of the stronger sex.

You can determine a person’s excess body weight, taking into account their constitution, using Brock’s formula. However, to use it, you must first find out your body type.

To do this, just measure the circumference of your wrist and check the data with the table:

Women Men Constitution type
Up to 15 cm Up to 18 cm Asthenic
Up to 17 cm Up to 20 cm Norm
More than 17 cm More than 20 cm Hypersthenic

Photo
Further, in the case of age under 40 years, 110 is subtracted from the height indicator, over 40 - 100. This works with a normal constitution.

With an asthenic physique, an additional 10% is taken away, and with a hypersthenic physique, the same amount is added.

For athletes involved in strength sports, body proportions are important. Various services are used to determine these indicators.

The GERCULES.FIT website offers its own online calculator for calculating body proportions. It allows you to control volumes and make timely adjustments to your diet or training regimen.

What are the standards for women and men, taking into account age: table

It has long been proven that as age increases, weight indicators also increase in both men and women. In small amounts, these kilograms do not adversely affect health. However, in order to accurately understand your current condition, you need to learn how to correctly determine your weight taking into account your age.

You can find out the optimal indicators using the table:

Height Age
20-29 30-39 40-49 50-59 60-69
husband. wives husband. wives husband. wives husband. wives husband. wives
150 51 50 57 54 56,6 55 56 53 54 52
160 63 62 67 64 72 70 79,7 66 68 65
170 73 70 78 76 81 80 80 77 76,8 75
180 85 81 92 89 90 88 87,5 84,4 83,9 81,6
190 97 92 99 96 100 97 99 95 95 93

This calculation shows what a person's correct weight should be based on age.

Ideal numbers for a woman based on age

Photo
How to more correctly determine your ideal weight for a woman, taking into account her age, is still being debated. Different formulas often show different values, since not all factors influencing weight gain are taken into account.

Despite the individual characteristics of each representative of the fair sex, doctors and scientists use a table that determines the weight standards of women taking into account age.

As can be seen from the calculation data, for women of different ages after 50 years, the numbers gradually decrease.

However, excess weight calculators used for women may incorrectly show values after 50 years, when the fairer sex reaches menopause.

Age characteristics

The peculiarities of the age period after 55 years are that most women reach menopause by this time. On the one hand, they can breathe a sigh of relief - the hormonal storms have subsided, the work of most organs and systems has stabilized again. On the other hand, now the usual balance between estrogens and androgens (male hormones) is disrupted. And this manifests itself both through weight gain and through other abnormal deviations: hair growth in various parts of the body, changes in the contours of the figure, male-type obesity.

A lack of estrogen entails the following changes in a woman’s health and behavior:

  • increased bone fragility (lack of calcium);
  • a noticeable decrease in immune defense;
  • the appearance of problems with the genitourinary system;
  • increased irritability;
  • decreased performance;
  • deterioration of skin condition.

It is very important to accept these changes and try to adjust them in the ways available to you.

Hormone replacement therapy is now very popular in European countries. Women are prescribed hormone-containing drugs, and this is done strictly individually based on the results of blood tests.

Properly selected medications can almost completely neutralize the negative consequences of menopause, including the tendency to gain weight.

Table of normal and excess weight for men

However, not only women can calculate their ideal weight by age. Similar calculations were also made for men.

Men
Weight Age
51-97 20-29
55-99 30-39
57-100 40-49
56-99 50-59
54-95 60-69

The weight here is calculated in the height range from 1.5 to 1.9 cm. However, the table does not indicate extra pounds, only the generally accepted norm. We can demonstrate the mass surplus using a simple example.

As a starting point, let’s take a man 180 cm tall, of normal build, aged 20 to 30 years, then his optimal weight is considered to be 83-85 kg. Excess weight appears after passing the limit of 90 kg, and above 95 kg doctors can diagnose the first degree of obesity. However, all this data does not take into account the constitution of the body, which in the case of men, especially those gaining muscle mass, can play a decisive role.

Prevention

Obesity, like any disease, is easier to prevent than to treat. Therefore, it is very important to try not to gain too much weight by the age of 55. You are unlikely to be able to maintain your weight at the level of 40-45 year olds, but you need to strive to ensure that it does not exceed the upper limit of the norm.

And since after the onset of menopause metabolic processes slow down significantly, it is advisable to do everything to neutralize its consequences:

  1. Bad habits. They accelerate the onset and complicate the course of the menopause. They destroy the heart and kidneys, poison the body, and worsen the condition of the skin. Alcohol also provides extra “empty” calories, which usually no one takes into account when calculating your diet. And it retains fluid in the body and contributes to excess weight gain. So if before you often indulged in a cigarette with a glass of wine, now you can only afford it on holidays.
  2. Weight control. It is equally important to constantly monitor your body weight. Buy yourself a scale and keep a diary in which you will record their readings 1-2 times a week. You should not weigh yourself more often - even within a day, your weight can fluctuate within 1-2 kilograms. The graph looks even more clearly, in which weight is plotted on the upper scale, and dates on the lower scale. It shows trends towards weight gain or loss.
  3. Health monitoring. Unfortunately, our health does not improve over the years. And many diseases also cause weight gain. And in this case, diets will no longer help. The sooner they are identified, the faster they can be cured or their development stopped. At least once every two years, undergo a preventive examination, and it is better to visit a gynecologist every year.

But the most important thing is a positive attitude. Nothing contributes more to maintaining youth and slimness than a light and optimistic attitude towards life. 55-57 years old is not old age. This is the time when children have grown up and career growth has ended. This means it’s time for those things that have always been put off “for later.”

Relax, meet friends, do what you love. And then there will simply be no extra calories left that the body could store.

How to calculate extra pounds using an online calculator

Instead of working hard on the formula for the correct weight, you can use a simple and accessible method - calculate your excess weight using an online calculator. The simplest services require knowledge of only two values: height and weight. More complex ones take into account the constitution and require the introduction of volume parameters for various parts of the body.

You can find out your ideal weight using the calculator, taking into account your age. Often, in addition to the results, the service also provides simple recommendations.

Broca's method

A technology developed by the French surgeon and anthropologist Paul Broc will help you calculate excess weight. The basis is based on human height. Up to 165 cm, subtract 100, 166-175 cm, subtract 105, for values greater than 170 cm - 110. The creator of the formula suggests adjusting the determined number, taking into account your body type:

  • Normosthenic (normal) – the figure is proportionally built, average height, slender legs, thin waist. The muscles are well developed, the fat layer is the minimum necessary for good health.
  • Asthenic (small) – the body is elongated, the transverse parameters are smaller than the longitudinal ones. The chest is narrow, flat, the neck, limbs are thin, long, the face of the types is thin, the nose is thin. The muscles of asthenic people are poorly developed, the tendency to be overweight is minimal. Obesity occurs due to serious illnesses: after surgery, trauma, metabolic disorders, hormonal imbalances.
  • Hypersthenic (large) - the transverse parameters of the body are greater than the longitudinal ones, the bones and skeleton are wide, heavy, the legs are short and dense. A person’s height is usually less than average, and the tendency to be overweight is high.

For thin-boned asthenics with transverse dimensions much smaller than longitudinal ones, it is necessary to subtract 10% from the resulting figure. Hypersthenics with short legs, wide hips, and chest should add 10% to the obtained figure. Normasthenics with a proportional body do not need to change the final value; the final number is considered the main one.

Brock's technique, nuances of calculations

Using the method, the calculated ideal weight parameter is adjusted for age. Nutritionists, naturopathic specialists consider the figures to be correct for representatives of the fairer sex 40-50 years old. Girls from 20 to 30 years old should reduce the numbers by 10-12%, ladies 50+ add 5-7%.

There is no point in finding out your excess weight using Brock's method for teenagers under 18, pregnant or lactating women. It is not relevant for athletes, bodybuilders, or those whose training is aimed at actively building muscle mass. For them, there are other ways to calculate the ratio of adipose tissue and muscles, which will help determine thinness and obesity.

Expert opinions

Photo
Margarita Koroleva, famous nutritionist, author of the books “The Easy Path to Slimness” and “Food Diary”

The nutritionist, whose services have been used by many show business stars, advises not to chase fashion trends in the field of weight loss, but to consider reducing overall body weight primarily from a health point of view. You should go on a diet only after calculating your ideal weight correctly. If it meets the norm, but your figure is not satisfactory, then you need to focus not on limiting your diet, but on physical activity.

David Heber, MD, director of the University of California Nutrition Center

A well-known American nutritionist believes that the value of BMI is greatly exaggerated. You can determine whether you are overweight using a formula, but you cannot calculate the percentage of body fat. For quality weight loss, says David Heber, you need to know exactly the percentage of adipose tissue.

Grigory Pavlovsky, psychotherapist at the IntuEat Center for the Therapy of Eating Disorders and Eating Behaviors

Dr. Pavlovsky writes that the indicators that are obtained if you calculate excess weight using a formula and a calculator are very arbitrary. They are not suitable for everyone. So, the most striking exception is athletes with high muscle mass. These values should not be applied to women during menopause or diabetics.

Where to start?

Remember that excess weight often “signals” health problems, which is a reason for medical examination and treatment by specialists. Regardless of the cause, it is possible and necessary to combat the problem - start with lifestyle modifications: limiting daily caloric intake, avoiding quickly digestible carbohydrates, maintaining a drinking regime, and engaging in moderate physical activity. Don’t rush to buy fat-burning dietary supplements, go hungry or go on a debilitating diet. Fast does not mean effective; such methods can not only distance you from obtaining the desired result, but also cause harm. Get ready for a long struggle and remember: motivation is a powerful engine of progress.

Main conclusions

Indicators of optimal weight are beacons, crossing which you should think about your health:

  1. You can determine the surplus or deficit of mass both using formulas and through special services.
  2. For a more accurate result, the correct weight calculator must take into account the age factor and body constitution.
  3. The indicators of men and women differ due to the characteristics and functions of fatty tissue.
  4. BMI standards are not always correct for men, diabetics and menopausal women.

And yet, knowing your BMI is necessary for any person who goes on a diet or simply keeps himself in healthy shape.

Formula for calculations with a tendency towards completeness

If there is an innate tendency to be overweight, there is a separate technique that determines the parameters of the figure. A detailed description is found in the book “Diet for People with Reduced Metabolism” by Barbara Edelstein.

Calculations are carried out in stages. First, we determine what weight could be with normal metabolism. Example: the optimal weight is 50 kilograms, to it we add 1 kilogram for every centimeter of height over 150. To the resulting figure we add ½ kilogram for each year, starting from 25. In general, no more than 7 kilograms are added.

Let's move on to data correction:

  • add 4.5-7 kilograms;
  • then add 4-7 kilograms (if the weight is more than 90);
  • plus 2-3 kilograms (if body weight is more than 100 kg).

Example: height of a 48-year-old lady is 155, weight is 95. We get: 45 + 1 x (155 – 150) + 7 + 7 + 7 = 71 kilograms.

The resulting figure is the benchmark for a specific case. Losing weight to 60-62 kilograms will cause health problems. If in the future the lady wants to get better, she will quickly return to her original positions. Moreover, you will become fatter, while your appetite will be uncontrollable, which threatens obesity.

How not to make mistakes in calculations

Using the formula you like, take into account that the parameters of the figure change depending on the time of day, day of the week, month. This is normal, because each organism is subject to individual physiological fluctuations. Body weight fluctuates, due to diet, rest, sleep patterns, climate, well-being, and various factors. Accurate data is obtained by weighing no more than once a week.

The female body is a delicate structure, where weight fluctuates depending on critical days and the amount of water drunk. If in the morning your weight was 61 kilograms, and by the evening it became 62 kilograms, don’t panic, urgently lose weight, start a diet. Such completeness is a temporary phenomenon that does not deserve close attention.

Overweight among bodybuilders and athletes is common. Their training in most cases is aimed at building a sculpted, muscular figure. The muscles of people involved in sports weigh twice as much as the fat layer. This is a normal, natural phenomenon.

BMI, should we blindly believe the results obtained?

Body mass index is a relative value, based on statistics that take into account the body composition of people in different countries. In most cases, BMI is higher than normal, for example, if a person’s bones are wide, heavy, or their figure is muscular and dense. This is normal, it once again proves that you don’t need to immediately go on a diet or exhaust your body with workouts.

According to WHO data, more than half of the population in Russia suffers from stage I obesity. If we compare US data, it turns out that Americans are much more likely than Russians to be overeating and obese.

  1. Nutritionists and naturopathic doctors believe that a person should monitor his own weight and well-being. This mobilizes the body, increases the desire to lead a healthy lifestyle, adhere to nutritional rules, and play sports.
  2. Psychologists are opposed to BMI calculations, deeply convinced that online calculators are to blame for the growing number of users dissatisfied with their figure.

Whatever calculation formula you choose, focus on your overall well-being and listen to the sensations inside your body. A sharp decrease in weight is fraught with serious consequences, especially with chronic diseases. If it is difficult to determine how severe your obesity is, you should seek the help of a nutritionist.
