Why does the belly grow in women after 40, 50 years and how to remove it. Causes and solutions

Women are called the beautiful half of humanity for their beauty, sincerity, harmony, both external and internal. Young ladies who attract admiring glances are slim, energetic, with appetizing shapes. Looking great sometimes takes a lot of effort. But, unfortunately, they do not always lead to the desired results. What is the reason for the increase in body volume, especially the expansion of the waist? This is the most exciting question, often not only for women.

Natural causes of belly fat in women

Figure correction is possible only after identifying the factors leading to an increase in fat in the abdominal area.

Natural causes of belly growth include:

  1. Dietary habits that adversely affect body weight. Improper distribution of breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks, excessive consumption of fried foods, flour, sweets, carbonated drinks can lead to the appearance of fat in the waist area. Artificial additives lead to disruption of metabolic processes.
  2. Lack of physical activity. A sedentary lifestyle significantly slows down metabolic processes in the body and contributes to weight gain.
  3. Bad habits. When alcohol enters the body, it is very quickly absorbed into the walls of the stomach, interfering with the normal process of food absorption.
  4. Lack of sleep . A person should have at least 7-8 hours of rest. Otherwise, the body will not be able to function normally.

The causes of abdominal growth in women are most often due to health problems. The most dangerous place for fat accumulation is the abdomen, since there it can be distributed not only superficially, but also near the internal organs.

Inability to rest properly

Constant stress provokes an increase in the abdomen and overall body weight due to disturbances in the gastrointestinal tract. Also, during nervous overstrain, there is an increased production of cortisol, which causes an increased feeling of hunger.

To eliminate its consequences, you need to learn how to rest properly. This does not require taking drastic measures. It is enough to use 4 rules for normalizing sleep:

  1. Get rid of bad habits or don’t smoke an hour before bedtime. Smoking increases your heart rate and excites your nervous system. Therefore, in order to have a sound sleep and the body has time to recover during the night, you should limit smoking in the evening.
  2. Sleep in complete darkness. Melatonin is a hormone that is produced during sleep. It supports the human immune system and affects mood. Any light, not just sunlight, blocks its production. Therefore, to reduce the effects of stress, you need to sleep in a dark room or use a sleep mask.
  3. Develop a sleep routine. You need to sleep at least 7 and no more than 8 hours. However, it is important that going to bed and waking up at the same time will reduce your overall stress levels. To develop a healthy habit, it is recommended to think through an evening ritual and follow it strictly. This could be reading a book or drinking a cup of chamomile tea. Then the process of falling asleep will not cause difficulties.
  4. Exercise. Physical activity promotes the production of endorphin, a hormone that affects the emotional state, and helps fight stress. Thanks to even short morning exercises, it will be much easier to fall asleep in the evening.

What will help remove belly fat?

To eliminate an excessively voluminous abdomen, women must take into account all of the above factors, the presence or absence of which depends only on them.

The following recommendations will help normalize your lifestyle:

  1. Correcting food errors. Fractional 5-6 meals a day are necessary for the proper functioning of the whole body. The predominance of vegetables and fruits, refusal or reduction in the amount of fried, smoked, too salty or spicy foods is the right step towards getting rid of a big belly.

  2. Don't forget to drink enough water every day. Lack of water in the body leads to its accumulation, since the body tends to accumulate “reserves” for difficult times.
  3. Maintaining general muscle tone. Even with a sedentary job, you can find time for light physical activity. If you don’t have enough time to visit the gym, you can go for walks on the way home.
  4. Normalization of sleep. A person needs proper rest, so you should plan your day in such a way that you can get a good night's sleep.

Positive attitudes and an established diet, exercise and rest will improve your figure and remove excess belly fat.

What to do if you have no money and time?

Modern women are so busy that they can rarely afford to eat properly and exercise in the gym. But I want to reduce my belly, no one would like to be fat. A set of exercises will come to the rescue, allowing a woman aged 50 to lose her belly at home. They require only 10-15 minutes daily, and the result is noticeable within a month.

If you need to not only remove inches, but also tighten your skin, why not try body wraps? The ingredients for them cost pennies; you need cling film and honey, clay, mustard or coffee grounds. Massage has a good effect; it removes harmful substances from the skin, stimulates cell renewal and tightens the tummy. Supplement these procedures with a contrast shower and in a couple of months you will not recognize your figure. The main thing is regularity.

Poor posture as a cause of abdominal enlargement

If there is absolutely no excess weight, a woman may have a protruding belly, which does not add beauty to her overall appearance. Constant slouching leads to curvature of the spine, as a result of which organs in the abdominal cavity can be displaced.

The stomach grows in women - the reasons for this may lie in incorrect posture : at the initial stage, stooping leads to overstrain of the back muscles, as a result of which the abdominal muscles are overstretched. This phenomenon is typical for people leading a sedentary lifestyle and doing sedentary work.

Incorrect posture is one of the reasons why the belly grows in women.

In this case, the abdomen will increase involuntarily, and in the absence of proper physical activity, fat will accumulate in the abdominal area quite quickly.

Beer belly

In this case, your belly is shaped like the belly of an early pregnant woman.

Reason: Alcohol. Alcoholic drinks are full of calories, ranging from 180 to 500 per drink. And if you mix it with sugar-containing soda, it often leads to the accumulation of gas in the stomach. As a result, we get that same “beer belly.”

What to do: Any physical activity will help, but we recommend focusing on regular cardio training. Boxing is a great option that targets the entire body. You can burn up to 800 calories per hour (that's four large glasses of wine) depending on the intensity of your workout.

Try boxing classes online, buy a punching bag and sign up for classes at a fitness club when it opens its doors again in your city.

And also try to drink no more than 14 servings of alcohol per week - this is 2.5 liters of beer or 6 medium glasses of wine.

According to the nutritionist, there is a direct link between alcohol and weight gain. “If you want to lose weight, learn to limit yourself to one or two drinks.

Drinking alcohol late at night can affect your sleep and hormones and, in turn, cause sleep apnea, snoring and other problems that won't benefit your waistline, says Rhiannon Lambert.

How to correct your posture?

With good posture, your hips, torso and head should be at the same level. The stomach is flat and the chest is slightly pushed forward.

Recommendations for achieving a flat stomach include:

  1. Strengthening the spine with vitamins. Sometimes a lack of calcium can lead to weakening of the bones in the spine. Approximately 80% of calcium needs can be met by dairy products, which must be present in the diet.
  2. Moderate physical activity. The process of developing posture begins at an early age, but it is never too late to learn to hold your back straight. For this, exercises for arching and straightening the back, bringing the shoulder blades together, circular movements of the arms, turning the head left and right and in a circle, pulling up and hanging on the horizontal bar, clasping the hands behind the back are suitable.
  3. Swimming has a beneficial effect on aligning posture and maintaining muscle tone in general.

  4. The sleeping surface should be flat and hard, the pillow should not be high.

Forming correct posture will relieve back pain and help improve your appearance - your stomach will tighten and will not stick out too much.

Belly grows due to hormonal imbalances

The interconnectedness of all systems in the body leads to the fact that if one of them is disrupted, changes can occur throughout the body. Changes in hormonal levels can lead to weight gain, and as a result, to growth of the abdomen.

Thyroid hormones are responsible for the breakdown of fatty acids. If there is an imbalance, fats will not be able to be broken down, but will settle in the abdominal area. With hormonal imbalances, the production of female hormones decreases and male hormones increase. This promotes android-type fat distribution.

What to do if there is a hormone imbalance?

In women, abdominal growth can be directly related to the level of hormones that balance the internal state of the body. Hormonal imbalances, which can occur for various reasons, have a significant impact on your overall figure.

To eliminate this problem, it is recommended to consult an endocrinologist. The doctor will recommend tests to study hormonal levels, after which treatment will be prescribed. Hormonal medications are selected exclusively by the doctor individually for each patient; self-medication is unacceptable due to possible contraindications.

Additional measures

If a woman feels moral stress, doesn’t want to get up in the morning, is constantly tired and has bad thoughts, we can talk about depression. The body is also under stress, so it accumulates fat. The help of a psychologist will help improve your moral well-being and put you in a favorable mood.

The following methods will help bring consciousness into harmony:

  • regular yoga classes;
  • warm herbal teas;
  • baths with essential oils;
  • meditation;
  • listening to soothing music, etc.

An equally important aspect in losing weight is the state of hormonal levels. Contact an endocrinologist who, if there are problems, will prescribe the necessary medications to reduce the imbalance. If you cannot take medications for any reason, eat foods containing natural phytoestrogens: wheat germ, raspberries, pomegranates. Some are advised to independently prepare natural medicines based on hop cones, which contain an overwhelming amount of phytoestrogens. But be careful, improper use of decoctions can lead to even greater hormonal imbalance.

Gynecological diseases affecting abdominal size

The growth of a woman’s abdomen does not always occur due to an increase in the fat layer of the anterior abdominal wall.

Various gynecological diseases can lead to changes in the shape of the abdomen and its size:

  1. Uterine fibroids. An increase in the size of the abdomen is one of the most characteristic signs of the presence of tumors in the uterus. Body weight and volume may remain unchanged. The type of fibroid and its location affects the growth rate - from a few millimeters to several centimeters per year. In addition to an enlarged abdomen, pain during urination, constipation, bleeding, and lower back pain may occur.

  2. Cyst. Temporary cysts can occur in young women of childbearing age, but in most cases they are not dangerous. The secondary stage of cyst development is more dangerous and requires surgical intervention. Symptoms of its presence are severe pain, bleeding, painful irregular periods, and there may be a feeling of pressure from the inside.
  3. Oncological diseases. A constant feeling of a full stomach, bloating and pain in the lower abdomen can be a sign of serious ongoing diseases, in particular cancer. Pain can only be experienced when urinating and eating.

How to reduce your belly without pregnancy

A woman's belly grows, the reasons for which may lie not in her pregnant state, but in cases of gynecological diseases. An examination by a doctor is a necessary procedure in the life of every woman, which makes it possible to prevent or promptly detect at an early stage the presence of various diseases.

If the growth of the abdomen is caused by these factors, then it will not be possible to get rid of it without determining the cause and without undergoing a course of treatment.

The doctor will suggest you undergo a full examination:

  • examination on a gynecological chair;
  • Ultrasound of the pelvic organs, which, in addition to examination, will help ensure that there is no pregnancy;

  • cytological examination of a smear;
  • hysteroscopy;
  • Dopplerography;
  • colposcopic diagnosis.

All studies will help identify the presence and location of formations, if any. After the examination, the doctor will be able to draw up a competent treatment regimen using medication, and in the case of an advanced condition, using surgical intervention.

How stress affects your waist size and what to do to reduce it

Very often, stress and extra centimeters in the abdominal area are closely related concepts. In stressful situations and prolonged nervous tension, active production of the hormone cortisol occurs. A prolonged state of elevated cortisol levels causes the body's stored reserves to move into visceral fat cells, especially in the abdominal area.

It is for this reason that an increase in waist size is called a cortisol belly. In addition, cravings for certain foods increase and appetite increases.

Methods for getting rid of stress fat include:

  1. Engagement of muscles. You should come to the understanding that a stressful situation cannot be resolved through overeating, and forceful exercise will help release negative emotions and balance the woman’s condition.
  2. Do not overuse coffee. Coffee drink promotes the production of cortisol, so it is advisable to consume it in doses.
  3. Normalization of sleep. During nervous tension, healthy sleep will help the body rest and increase its ability to withstand the effects of stressors.

  4. Avoid overeating. Learning self-control is the main way to get rid of the habit of eating stress.

Weight gain during stressful situations is the result of a number of factors that a woman can control.

Why does the belly begin to grow after childbirth?

A woman’s natural desire after childbirth is to quickly return to her pre-pregnancy body parameters.

Abdominal growth after childbirth can occur for several reasons:

  • Fetal growth leads to stretching of the abdominal walls. It can be quite difficult for muscles to return to their original state;
  • changes in hormonal levels, which lead to an increase in body weight and, as a result, an increase in waist size;
  • the new mother is busy taking care of the child, and simply doesn’t have enough time to take care of herself. An incorrect diet in your free time from the child does not have the best effect on your figure.

Changes in figure most often affect women who did not pay enough attention to physical exercise before pregnancy.

Exercises against age deposits

One of the most effective ways to get rid of fat is physical activity. Even the busiest woman can find a few minutes a day to do a few exercises.

Experts recommend static exercises. One of the best is the plank. That is, you need to take a push-up position, stand on your elbows, straighten your body and stay in this position for 30 seconds, increasing the time over time. The correct technique is illustrated in the photo below. For variety, you can do a side plank.

Below, watch a video with a set of effective abdominal exercises. Pay special attention to the technique, otherwise the training will be ineffective and can lead to injury:

If you follow the technique of performing special exercises, as well as regularly train at home, you will soon be able to burn fat in the abdominal area. The main thing is not to be lazy and constantly study.

How to remove belly fat after childbirth

Recovering from childbirth can be quite difficult. Lack of time, breastfeeding, inability to play sports - all this leaves an imprint on the psycho-emotional and physiological state of a woman.

To eliminate the problem of a large belly, you should follow the recommendations:

  1. Make sure there is no discrepancy in the abdominal muscles. When muscles are overstrained, they may not be able to return to their original shape on their own. In this case, you will need the help of a doctor.
  2. Walking with a stroller is a good way to get exercise.

  3. Breathing techniques such as yoga and bodyflex will strengthen your abdominal muscles.
  4. Balance your diet. It is necessary to stop dieting and eating unhealthy foods.

To prevent deterioration in the shape of the abdomen, it is necessary to use a special bandage during pregnancy , which will help reduce the load on the abdominal muscles.

Belly of a young mother

In this case, there is loose skin on the abdomen, and on both sides of the navel there are two fat accumulations (pouches).

Reason: A not very toned stomach and loose skin are a natural side effect of pregnancy.

But if your belly continues to look like this months or years after having your baby, you may have diastasis recti. This is why the inner edges of these muscles along the abdomen (which separate when you are pregnant) do not reconnect.

What to do: Try not to do abdominal crunches. These exercises can aggravate any abdominal tear after childbirth. It's best to wait at least 6 weeks and then try special training programs designed to rebuild your muscles after childbirth.

Also try doing pelvic floor exercises:

  • Lie on your back, bend your knees.
  • Tighten your abs and lift your pelvis up to be in a glute bridge position.
  • Pause at the top and then slowly lower down to the starting position.

Repeat 5-10 times.

What to eat: Rhiannon stresses: “Your baby has been growing inside you for 9 months - you won't get your belly back overnight. The postpartum period is a dangerous time to diet, as your body needs energy to breastfeed your baby and cope with sleepless nights. If it's been a year since your baby was born, a calorie deficit and a balanced diet are your best option."

Other reasons for abdominal enlargement in the stomach area at 30, 40, 50 years old

Many women experience an increase in volume in the lower abdomen as they age.

The following factors influence this:

  • With age, the amount of estrogen decreases, as a result of which the activity of the thyroid gland decreases. In this case, the metabolism in the body slows down.
  • irritable bowel syndrome, which manifests itself in the form of bloating, increased gas production and cramping.
  • ascites is an accumulation of fluid that leads to stretching of the abdominal walls.
  • development of diabetes mellitus. In this case, you cannot do without sugar-lowering medications.
  • loss of elasticity of muscles and skin in the abdominal area.
  • age-related gynecological changes.

Regardless of the reasons for which a woman’s belly begins to grow, it is important to monitor her health and promptly consult a doctor if unexplained changes in her figure occur.

Why does fat accumulate in the abdominal area?

The reasons may be different, and it depends on how you can get your figure in order, in what time, and whether there is a risk of returning to your previous undesirable shape.

Nutrition

The enemy of a slim body is unhealthy and irrational nutrition. An unbalanced diet provokes fat deposits in problem areas. And the abundance of food eaten at one time stretches the walls of the stomach.

Nutritionists suggest giving up:

  • white bread;
  • carbonated drinks;
  • sweet desserts;
  • beer;
  • chips and crackers
  • various fast food.

The diet should have a predominance of protein foods:

  • low fat cottage cheese;
  • poultry meat;
  • lean beef;
  • eggs (chicken, quail);
  • vegetables

To prevent the stomach walls from stretching, food should be taken in small portions 3-4 times a day. A large belly in women, the causes of which lie in poor nutrition, can be significantly reduced without additional effort; you just need to listen to the advice of specialists.

Physical activity level

An inactive, sedentary lifestyle significantly affects muscles, including abdominal ones:

  • tissue elasticity decreases;
  • the overall tone of the body decreases;
  • the abdominal wall ceases to hold its shape and stretches;
  • metabolism occurs more slowly;
  • there is a risk of prolapse of internal organs;
  • visual looseness of the figure appears.

To improve the condition it is recommended:

  • in 10 minutes. after eating, exercise for 15 minutes in the fresh air;
  • start the morning with gymnastics;
  • start pumping your abdominal muscles;
  • walk more often, stop using the elevator, transport;
  • Give yourself physical activity several times during the working day.

A specialized set of exercises to restore abdominal muscle tone can be found on the Internet.

Bad habits

Extra pounds appear where there are bad habits:

  • Drinking alcoholic beverages. The mechanism of action is such that, first of all, they are absorbed, creating a picture of saturation, in which most of the food eaten is sent to fat deposits. In women, the main deposits are located mainly in the lower abdomen and thighs.

  • Smoking . A smoked cigarette slows down metabolism, and then the body begins to “shove into the corners” unexcreted and undigested substances.
  • Systematic overeating . Excess useful and not so useful substances are sent to the storage areas of the “apron” on the stomach and the “breeches” of the hips.
  • Eating in the evening , before bed.
  • Ill-considered abandonment of bad habits . If you suddenly give up cigarettes and replace them with candies and cookies, you may gain additional weight. A similar picture awaits those who decide to use diets or fasting. The body perceives this as a threat and, fearing a further lack of food, tries to force its owner to “break loose” and start eating at an accelerated pace, for future use.

Avitaminosis

Medical studies have shown that a lack of vitamin D in the body is associated with the formation of excess fat.

You can replenish it:

  • using sunbathing;
  • taking fish oil;
  • eating butter;
  • inclusion in the regular diet of sea fish.

The next one, vitamin C, promotes metabolism and reduces the amount of cortisol in the body (the culprit behind the accumulation of harmful visceral fat). It has been proven that women who prefer yellow and red products are slimmer in the waist.

In addition to citrus fruits, vitamin C is found in:

  • bell pepper;
  • mango;
  • kiwi;
  • sauerkraut.

In adulthood, the female body begins to absorb nutrients worse; therefore, in order to avoid vitamin deficiency, doctors recommend taking multivitamin complexes.

Diseases of internal organs

A large belly in women, the causes of which are associated with diseases of the internal organs, can be reduced by removing the main problem.

For example:

  • Edema phenomena . In the area of the abdomen and mediastinum there are a large number of lymph nodes. If they begin to work with overload, then lymph stagnation occurs, which causes swelling and visually increases waist size.
  • Presence of uterine fibroids . Asymptomatic fibroids that increase in size give the impression of gaining excess weight. But it’s not a diet that will help here, but a visit to a gynecologist to clarify the diagnosis and carry out, for example, embolization of the uterine arteries.
  • Ascid (cystic formation containing fluid). The disease has several causes (organ dysfunction, post-traumatic event) and can be localized in the ovaries or pancreas. At a certain size, the formation tends to be located in the central region of the abdomen.
  • Polycystic disease , accompanied by gigantic enlargement of the kidneys. With the disease, all organs in the abdominal area shift forward, causing protrusion.

An increase in volume can also be the result of an enlarged liver due to cirrhosis, as well as cancerous tumors.

Inability to rest properly

With age, the inability to properly organize your rest affects your figure more and more.

Body fat is more likely to increase in people who:

  • spend little time sleeping at night;
  • do not take daily walks in the fresh air;
  • prefer to eat high-calorie foods at night;
  • systematically overeat, especially on holidays;
  • do not alternate mental activities with physical ones.

Flatulence

The disease is characterized by intense gas formation and slow release of accumulated air to the outside. As a result, the walls of the abdomen swell, visually increasing its size.

In order to avoid such a picture, it is necessary to limit the following in your diet:

  • legumes;
  • grain crops;
  • white cabbage;
  • broccoli;
  • a number of fruits that cause fermentation, as well as apples and plums.

A large belly in women can cause flatulence.
It is important to take the initial processing of food seriously when eating: chew each portion thoroughly and slowly. In case of systematic gas formation, it is recommended to consult a gastroenterologist.

Poor posture

A sedentary, sedentary lifestyle affects the weakening of the muscular frame and deformation of the spine. One of the manifestations of this picture is hyperlordosis - a significant forward deflection of the lower back. In this case, the stomach protrudes not only due to anatomical disorders, but also because the functioning of the intestines is disrupted, bloating appears, which aggravates the appearance.

To prevent the occurrence of these phenomena or in their early stages, exercises for the lower back can help.

They are included in such complexes of physical activity as “Youth and health of the spine.” Acquired scoliosis, a curvature of the spine in the cervicothoracic region, can also affect posture. Possible displacement of organs with it is reflected in the shape of the abdomen.

Hereditary factor

The presence of an enlarged abdomen may be a genetically determined factor. Predisposition is identified through visual analysis of the appearance of parents and other close relatives.

In this case, it is difficult to get rid of excess volume; it is easier to keep yourself in shape so as not to gain even more weight. People with pear-shaped and apple-shaped figures are especially susceptible to fat deposits in the lower body.

Impact of stress

Stressful situations trigger the body's defense mechanism: the production of cortisol begins, which forces glucose to break down and fight the nervous condition. With a constant elevated level of the hormone in the blood and waste of glucose, the brain gives the command to make savings in reserve.

Hence the expression “Stress Eating.” Often, unconsciously, a person begins to eat unlimited quantities of sweets and high-calorie foods. The excess forms a cortisol belly.

A large belly in women, the causes of which are explained by stress, can be removed independently by following 6 rules:

  1. avoid conflicts and stress;
  2. include physical exercise in your daily routine;
  3. get used to eating slowly, chewing food;
  4. limit consumption of coffee and energy drinks;
  5. follow a basic diet;
  6. ensure sufficient, healthy sleep.

Excess weight

Excess volume on the body, including on the stomach, appears from overeating. Some of the nutrients are not consumed by the body and are deposited in the tissues. Most often, calories from sweets, baked goods, and fatty foods are sent to the bins.

Experts recommend, at a minimum:

  • limit yourself in carbohydrate consumption;
  • go in for sports (fitness);
  • monitor the condition of the intestines;
  • Drink enough fluids (not juices or soda).

Hormonal imbalances

Obesity can be a consequence of hormonal imbalances. One of the options is problems with the thyroid gland - hypothyroidism.

The disease provokes:

  • metabolic disease;
  • insomnia;

  • lethargy;
  • quick gain of kg.

Correction of the gland's functioning can be done under the guidance of a doctor by increasing iodine intake. Excess weight becomes a contributing factor to hormonal changes associated with menopause. The lack of sex hormones affects the increased formation of visceral (abdominal) fat, which is localized under the muscles and around the organs.

Pregnancy

A significant increase in the abdomen during pregnancy, in addition to the size of the fetus and the main, physiologically justified reason, may have several other reasons.

For example:

  • multiple births;
  • metabolic disease;
  • diabetes;
  • polyhydramnios;
  • swelling;
  • significant weight gain;
  • tumor of the placenta tissue.

In order to keep your health under control you need:

  • systematic consultations with a gynecologist;
  • taking measurements from the 20th week;
  • blood test to determine the amount of sugar;
  • regulated fluid intake;
  • a diet that limits sweets, fatty foods, and foods that cause gas.

When does an enlarged belly require specialist attention?

Sometimes a completely slender woman can observe a growing belly, but improving her diet and exercising does not help get rid of it. In some cases, lifestyle adjustments do not bring any results.

In such situations, it is recommended to consult a doctor:

  • a sharp increase in the abdomen without gaining excess weight;
