What are the benefits of cranberry juice for the gastrointestinal tract and the body as a whole?

Cranberry juice

The red berry from the swamps, better known as "cranberry", has attracted people's attention since ancient times. Elder healers were especially partial to the fruits of the evergreen plant, actively using them to create homemade medicines.

As in Ancient Rus', today cranberries are popular among connoisseurs of healthy and proper nutrition, as well as among lovers of traditional medicine. Why? Probably due to the general usefulness of cranberries for the human body.

Just think, but before the more or less qualitative development of medicine, it was the cranberry that was the main fighter against many pathologies of the human population. “Northern lemon” was widely used as a cure for:

  • scurvy;
  • fever;
  • skin ulcers;
  • inflammation;
  • ENT pathologies.

Fruit drinks: what is harmful to health?

And yet, fruit drinks made from lingonberries, viburnum and cranberries have their own contraindications for consumption. First of all, berry picking should be carried out only in forested areas as far away from roads as possible. These berries easily absorb toxins during the ripening process, and fruit drinks made from such berries can harm the body. Therefore, the environment for their germination must be environmentally friendly.

People with high stomach acidity and subsequently developing stomach ulcers should reduce or completely eliminate the consumption of fruit drinks made from forest berries. This is due to the high content of vitamin C in berries. Your doctor will give you a clear recommendation on how to follow the required diet.

Drinks made from lingonberries and viburnum, as well as cranberry juice, lower blood pressure. This can be a lifesaver for those who suffer from high blood pressure. And it may not be so noticeable for those whose blood pressure is normal. But if your blood pressure is often below normal, then you should drink berry fruit drinks with great caution to avoid harm to your health.

Properties of cranberry juice

Cranberry fruit drink is simply a storehouse of vitamins and minerals. It can be taken both for medicinal and preventive purposes. You need to figure out for what problems you can take it, and in what cases it is better to refuse.

Benefit

The usefulness of the properties of cranberry juice is undeniable. Even doctors who are distrustful of traditional medicine recommend taking it for certain diseases, as well as for prevention.

  1. First of all, this is an excellent protection against colds and flu, and is very effective during the spread of ARVI.
  2. Thanks to its antimicrobial functions, it is able to prevent the development of infectious diseases.
  3. It has a diuretic property, as a result of which the functioning of the kidneys and genitourinary system is normalized, and prevents the development of infections in the urinary tract.
  4. Helps strengthen blood vessels.
  5. Thanks to the mineral iron contained in the drink, it protects against the development of anemia (iron deficiency).
  6. Ascorbic acid prevents possible inflammatory reactions.
  7. Prevents damage to veins by varicose veins, thrombosis, improves blood circulation.
  8. Has antiseptic properties.
  9. The anti-cancer properties of cranberries are also known.

Contraindications

However, cranberry juice does not always bring benefits; on the contrary, it can cause harm.

  1. Due to its strong acidity, the drink should be drunk with caution if you have problems with the gastrointestinal tract.
  2. The rich scarlet color of the berries can cause allergies.
  3. Due to its diuretic properties, this drink is not recommended for people with hypotension.
  4. If your tooth enamel is highly sensitive, you should limit its frequent use, since ascorbic acid can accelerate its destruction.
  5. It is also contraindicated to consume the drink together with taking blood thinning medications, as blood clotting is possible due to the flavonoids contained in the berry.
  6. With frequent use of fruit juice, calcium can quickly be washed out of the body.

How to prepare fruit juice correctly

The food market cannot be called poor and boring. Likewise, cranberry juice can be purchased at any supermarket. But the most nutritious and healthy drink is one that was prepared with one’s own hands. The fruits for it are taken both fresh and frozen.

From fresh berries

The fruits are washed, cleared of twigs and leaves, and mashed, preferably with a wooden masher. Strain the resulting juice. Pour hot water over the mashed berries, add honey or sugar to taste, mix and place on the stove or in a slow cooker. Bring to a boil, let it brew for about a quarter of an hour. After cooling, the broth is filtered and mixed with the juice squeezed out at the beginning.

Important! This preparation option, when cranberry juice is not exposed to high temperatures, but is added to boiled cake, allows you to preserve vitamin C in the drink.

There is also an express method for preparing fruit juice: pour boiled water over the berries, add sugar or honey if desired, leave for a few minutes, then strain and drink.

From frozen berries

Frozen berries are a great option for replacing fresh ones outside the cranberry growing season. Shock freezing kills a large number of bacteria. In addition, this fruit has a less sour taste, which allows those who have problems with the gastrointestinal tract to drink fruit juice.

Fact! In fact, fruit juice made from both fresh and frozen fruits can be considered equally healthy.

To prepare it, defrost the berries and grind them in a blender. The resulting puree-like mass is poured with hot water, adding sugar if desired.

How to use it correctly

There are a number of basic rules for consuming this drink in the diet:

  • It is contraindicated to drink an acidic drink on an empty stomach;
  • when consumed within 10-14 days, take a break for a couple of weeks;
  • If you buy fruit juice in a store, look at the composition carefully: the proportion of berries should be at least 15%;
  • It is best to consume the drink at room temperature.

How and when can children drink fruit juice?

You can give cranberry juice to children already during the period when complementary foods of berries and fruits are introduced, that is, after approximately 6-8 months. For the first time, 1-2 tsp is enough to observe its effect on the body.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vgs0tQn3y6U

If no negative reactions occur within 24 hours, then you can increase the volume of the drink for the baby, and drink no more than 100 ml for up to a year. You should treat your child to this drink no more than twice a week. If negative reactions of the body (allergic or other) occur, it is worth postponing the use of the drink until a later age.

Consumption of cranberry juice by pregnant and lactating women

During pregnancy, a woman's body undergoes hormonal disruption. Sometimes problems such as nausea and vomiting, swelling, and indigestion may occur.

The positive properties of berries make it possible to combat these troubles. And the vitamin and mineral compositions help the correct and healthy formation of the fetus.

Doctors do not prohibit pregnant women from drinking fruit juice, but its consumption should be moderate.

Important! The amount of cranberry juice that will not harm either the woman or her baby is determined by her attending physician!

At the early stage of pregnancy, when the body is susceptible to hormonal imbalance, cranberry juice helps fight signs of toxicosis and increases the body's resistance to harmful environmental influences. At this time, you can drink about half a liter of drink per day.

By the middle of the term it is allowed to increase to 1 liter per day. After the 7th month, it is worth reducing the dosage and stopping drinking the drink a couple of weeks before giving birth. Temporary abstinence from it is necessary due to the properties of the berries to thin the blood, which can negatively affect labor.

After the birth of the child, you are allowed to return to drinking the drink again for a speedy recovery of the body. True, pediatricians are of the opinion that you should wait until the child is 3 months old. Drinking cranberry juice is allowed while breastfeeding in small quantities.

You can start with 1 glass per day, preferably in the first half of the day, gradually increasing to 3-4 glasses per day. Naturally, monitor the behavior of the baby’s body. In case of negative reactions, stop taking immediately.

When losing weight

Cranberries are known for their medicinal properties. But, besides this, it is effective in losing weight, since it can improve metabolism and rid the body of accumulated toxins and excess water.

In addition, the calorie content of the berry is quite low. However, when eating berries or fruit juice during a diet, do not forget about contraindications. The cranberry weight loss system has several rules, the observance of which makes the diet effective:

  • during fasting days or a diet, you can drink up to 5-6 glasses of fruit drink per day;
  • dilute juice and water in equal quantities;
  • don't forget to drink water;
  • eat at least 5 times a day.

For cystitis

It has long been noted that cranberries for cystitis (inflammation of the bladder) are one of the best traditional medicines. Due to its healing properties, fruit juice from this berry is considered a good treatment.

Cranberries for cystitis can quickly remove urine, washing away pathogenic microorganisms from the walls of the organ, while providing anti-inflammatory effects. After all, a large number of pathogenic microbes live and multiply in an alkaline environment, and die in an acidic environment. Thus, cranberries also have an antimicrobial effect.

For a cold

Warm cranberry juice is useful for colds and ARVI. After all, berries have bactericidal properties. In addition, being a strong diuretic, fruit juice removes a large amount of fluid from the body along with microbes. To improve your well-being, 2-3 glasses a day are enough.

At a temperature

When the temperature rises, cranberry juice simply needs to be consumed. Thanks to its properties, the berry gets rid of harmful microorganisms and makes you sweat properly, which ultimately leads to a decrease in temperature.

For sore throat

A warm fruit drink can not only remove pathogens, but also relieve a sore throat. To do this, you need to squeeze the juice from the berries, add honey and drink a tablespoon or gargle with it. This leads to rapid recovery and improved well-being.

For pancreatitis

If you have pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas), cranberry drink is prohibited for consumption due to its high acidity. However, being in the recovery stage, it is recommended for use. The vitamin C contained in the drink promotes a restorative effect. You need to drink little by little, starting with 50 ml per day.

For gastritis

Having high acidity, cranberry juice should be taken with an eye on the body’s reaction. It is not advisable to drink it in its pure form; you can dilute it with another juice (vegetable) of less acidity.

This will only increase the value of the product. Cranberry juice for gastritis suppresses viruses and infections, protects against harmful microorganisms that destroy the walls of the stomach, increases the secretion of gastric juice, and reduces inflammation of the organ.

For pyelonephritis

In cases of kidney inflammation, cranberries are often recommended by doctors as an auxiliary remedy to enhance the effect of medications. It’s better to make a drink from this berry yourself, since store-bought products contain many different additives that are unnecessary for the body. Consume 3-4 tablespoons before bedtime.

For high blood pressure

Cranberry drink is one of the generally accepted means of preventing and treating hypertension. The berry can both enhance the effect of medications taken and, in some cases, replace them.

Thanks to properties such as a diuretic effect, strengthening the walls of blood vessels and cleansing them, this product lowers blood pressure. But it will be useful if you use it more than once and wait for the result, but for some time for preventive purposes. But do not forget to follow the dosage measures.

For gout

Experts believe that eating cranberries for gout (metabolic disorder) is prohibited due to its high acidity. However, treatment with cranberry juice is quite possible.

In this case, the daily norm should not exceed 2-3 tablespoons. It is especially effective to take this remedy either at the beginning of the disease or during the recovery stage and only after examining the body and taking a test for uric acid content.

For poisoning and diarrhea

If the body is intoxicated, drinking cranberry juice is not only possible, but necessary. Thanks to its antibacterial properties, it is able to fight pathogenic bacteria in the gastrointestinal tract, and thanks to its diuretic function, everything harmful is quickly washed out of the body. It is recommended not to add sugar or sweetener to your drink; The natural acid of the berry improves the quality of the fight.

Important! Despite the high effectiveness of cranberry juice in the treatment of many diseases, its use for therapeutic purposes can only be prescribed by the attending physician!

Drink storage features

To preserve all the vitamins in the drink, it should be drunk immediately after preparation or within two days if stored in a cool place. A slightly longer shelf life is possible, but in this case sterilization of the product is necessary, which negatively affects its vitamin composition. Freezing fruit juice is also acceptable.

Cranberries are one of the most valuable berries, and properly prepared cranberry juice is a source of vitamins and minerals. But, like any other product, it should be consumed in moderation to avoid negative consequences for the body.
