Does dry fasting help you lose weight - reviews of the results

Publication date: December 24, 2021.

Of all types of short-term diets, dry fasting is considered the most effective. This is a complete refusal not only from food, but also from water.

It has been known since ancient times and requires special willpower and psychological readiness from a person, but in return it bears fruit.

Effective weight correction, cleansing the body, restoring normal metabolism and stabilizing some psychological processes are just a few of the overall benefits.

But along with its high effectiveness, dry fasting also has a wide range of limitations and contraindications.

The benefits and harms of dry fasting from a medical point of view

The benefits and harms of dry fasting from a medical point of view

Those who want to lose weight often have no idea what dry fasting is, although they have heard about such a system. It represents a complete refusal of food and water for a certain time. During this period, which can be, for example, 36 hours, they do not eat anything or drink even clean water.

There is also a diet option that is especially difficult to follow, in which any contact with moisture is excluded - the person not only does not drink, but also does not take a shower, does not carry out hygiene procedures, including washing, and does not go out in the rain. Such strict rules may seem impracticable, but in reality it is not so difficult if you approach fasting correctly.

According to medical research, complete abstinence from food and drink for a short period of time brings certain benefits to the body. In some cases, it turns out to be necessary to use this nutritional system to treat any disease.

The diet is based on the fact that inflammation occurring inside the body requires sufficient water to develop. Swelling of the problem area occurs, and various bacteria and viruses begin to multiply in a humid environment. With a lack of moisture, harmful microorganisms quickly die. This helps to eliminate the disease as quickly as possible.

Dry therapeutic fasting can bring the following benefits:

  • Help in getting rid of various inflammatory processes occurring in the body. During the period when restrictions are observed, problems may begin due to lack of fluid. When dehydration occurs, body cells and harmful microorganisms begin to fight for remaining moisture. As a result of using the treatment system, victory goes to the cells, and harmful microorganisms and bacteria are deprived of moisture and die.
  • Albumin is degraded, its amino acids are distributed throughout the body, which helps to fully satisfy immediate needs. First, the brain cells and the cardiovascular system are saturated. Many hormones are released into the blood. This completely eliminates inflammation that may occur in the body at this time.
  • Metabolism is significantly accelerated. The result of this is an improvement in metabolism, the destruction of harmful bacteria, viruses and toxins that can provoke disease.
  • The blood is purified and its composition is improved. All harmful and unnecessary substances that enter the body along with food and water during normal nutrition are released.
  • The consumption of proteins from internal reserves begins. This gradually leads to the breakdown of diseased tissues, swelling and adhesions, neoplasms, and plaques inside the vessels.
  • Fasting without water makes it easier to cope with boils and suppurations, and get rid of colds and infections. With the help of this diet, the condition improves with concussions and injuries, inflammatory processes in the periosteum and inner ear.

It is worth noting that fasting without food and water is a rather harsh measure, which may not have the best effect on your health. Dry fasting should not be carried out for longer than 3 days. If there is a need for long-term fasting treatment, you need to consult a doctor to develop a regimen. You should not try dry fasting on your own, even if you have previously achieved positive results. The entire period of the diet should be carried out under the supervision of a specialist.

Diet features

It is true that this technique cures a large number of diseases. Evolutionarily, it so happened that, as a protective reaction, the human body, finding itself in harsh extreme conditions, begins to break down its fat deposits and pathological tissues.

And dry fasting is just such an extreme situation. In addition, this type of diet affects the human psyche. Here, too, you should sensibly and adequately assess your capabilities.

Three to four days without food, water or water treatments is no joke, and longer dry fasting at home is not recommended at all.

Hygienic manipulations such as oral hygiene, shower, bath, enemas, and hand washing are excluded. There are methods in which wiping with a damp towel is still allowed. But with the classic complete medical refusal of water, this is also prohibited.

In folk medicine, there is a practice of switching to dry fasting at the onset of colds.

Advantages

During dry fasting, all systems of the human body undergo restructuring and switch to the mode of extraction from water and nutrients reserves.

During this process, tissues are broken down and human structures are acidified. And all this happens in the shortest possible period of time. This is how foreign biological and chemical elements are destroyed in the body.

Dry fasting stops inflammatory processes of various nature. When water becomes scarce in the body, not only human cells lack it, but also foreign objects, for example, microbes, viruses, bacteria and other harmful microorganisms. It is already known for sure that the nature of the cell, although not yet fully understood, is stronger than the above microorganisms.

Fat and disease disappear into oblivion

In the battle for water, our cells win, and pathogenic bacilli die. And with them, the illnesses themselves and the inflammatory processes associated with them go away.

Those who use diets to correct their figure will be pleased with the fact that dry fasting is applicable for weight loss. Under stress of this magnitude, the body begins to spend a large amount of energy to maintain its vital functions, while using fat reserves.

Not only fat cells are burned, but also those that are not needed: weak, unhealthy ones. Active tissue renewal occurs, which has rejuvenating and healing consequences. This leads to increased immunity.

Another process directly related to dry fasting leads to increased immunity. After a short amount of time has passed after practicing this technique, the process of division of blood stem cells is activated, and the entire system is rejuvenated.

Contraindications

This diet is not recommended for weak people and those who have just decided to discover the wonderful world of diets and proper nutrition. You cannot start dry fasting if a person has the following diseases or is in the following conditions:

  • pregnancy and lactation;
  • renal pathology;
  • mental illness;
  • liver diseases;
  • diabetes;
  • bleeding disorders;
  • post-traumatic syndrome;
  • phlebeurysm;
  • recent stroke;
  • anemia;
  • general weakness of the body.
  • circulatory failure;
  • gout;
  • too low body weight.
  • diseased gallbladder.

Possible dangers to the body while on a hunger strike

Possible dangers to the body while on a hunger strike

The issue of the effectiveness of a food system interspersed with hunger strikes is worth studying more thoroughly. Among the opinions expressed by doctors, one can note a certain danger to health. It is expressed in the likelihood of death if the patient gets too carried away with weight loss. If you lose a quarter of your total body weight, the consequences can be quite dire.

A dry fast for 7 days may not bring the results that were expected - it is quite difficult to save a person after such a long period of refusing food and drink. After just three days, irreversible consequences occur in the body. When carrying out a diet during this period, it is necessary to constantly be under the supervision of a specialist, and for patients who have not yet practiced a hunger strike, this method is prohibited.

Changes in the body due to loss of moisture:

  • When, while following a diet, a person loses fluid in the amount of approximately 5% of the total weight, he begins to experience severe attacks of thirst. In this condition, the body temperature rises and nausea is felt.
  • When dehydration reaches 6-10%, shortness of breath occurs, speech is impaired, and weakness occurs, which is felt even in the muscles.
  • With a loss of moisture of 11-20%, the body gradually cools and the tongue swells. Visual and auditory hallucinations begin, and communication abilities decline.

Day three

In the morning, my condition still left much to be desired, but the temperature dropped a little and that day was already between 37 and 38. I felt a little better, but my throat still reminded me of its presence with painful sensations.

My back began to hurt very much in the lumbar region and along the spine, I think this was caused by the fact that I had to lie in bed a lot.

I tried to do some kneading and stretching exercises, but I didn’t have the strength for such activities, and I quit this activity.

Although I had a fever, I was tired of being at home. Walking and walking on the street was also not enough for me, but I really wanted fresh air.

I opened all the doors in the car wide open, threw back the seat and fell into it, rejoicing in the cool breeze blowing across my heated brow.

Time passed, I lay there and thought that I needed to record a video note about my fasting, while I was in the process, while the memories and sensations were fresh. I was wondering what I would say.

I’m studying to become a blogger in the social project “One Family” by Igor Kolpakov, cool and free training, I recommend it (thanks to him, in principle, this diary and this note appeared).

By the way, initially I did not intend to record a video report during the fasting process itself, and at first the feeling that I still needed to do something at the end of the day, come up with the text of my story, write it down, in general, the feeling of some kind of obligation, was noticeably annoying and did not let me relax.

Then I decided, okay, if it works, I’ll record it, if not, then no. Maybe sometime later, after fasting, I’ll shoot a video and tell you my impressions... But unbeknownst to myself, I, no, no, returned to thinking about the future scenario.

Apparently the blogger in me has not only been born and grown, but has also begun to determine my lifestyle, dictate my terms:) . Apparently this comrade could not allow such an unusual topic for material to go “by the way” and not make a story about it.

In general, I gave up, did not resist the overwhelming desire to share what was happening here, and in the evening I made a mini-video report.

My mouth was dry, my throat was stinging and it was a little difficult to speak, but having done the job, I went to bed happy, but that night, as well as the next, there was no longer any normal sleep.

I tossed and turned, trying to find the best and most comfortable place in the bed, but I fell into a shallow and fitful sleep only in the morning.

Weight decreased by another 1.6 kg.

Dry fasting - how to do it correctly

What is the power system?

It is recommended to study the features of dry fasting treatment in advance. This will help you create a diet that is most suitable for a particular person and avoid mistakes while following the established diet. The features of the system for getting rid of excess weight are as follows:

  • Dry hunger is a complete refusal of food and water for some period of time.
  • All contact with water is excluded, including that which the skin receives when washing, brushing teeth, bathing or taking a shower. Hygiene procedures should be postponed during this period.
  • It is necessary to remember that when trying to follow a diet, the result will depend on the state of the body and its capabilities. The presence of indications for a particular nutritional system should not be considered a basis for compliance.

Diet rules:

  1. Before starting a diet, the body should be prepared a little to improve performance and not provoke undesirable results. Preparation for fasting involves drinking clean water and raw plant products for a couple of days before fasting.
  2. If a person has never experienced dry fasting for weight loss before, the first time you should not continue it for more than a day.
  3. When the regime comes to an end, you need to drink a glass of water and eat something light - for example, a vegetable salad.
  4. If dizziness or attacks of nausea begin during the fasting period, it is better to abstain from this method of diet. The process of losing weight should not be carried out with a threat to health and life. If one option is poorly tolerated, it is worth choosing another.

What to remember

The method of dry fasting according to Shchennikov is distinguished by its approach in terms of psychology and attitude. Practice has a whole lot of nuances that must be observed.

Is it suitable for weight loss? Everyone must decide for themselves. But be sure to approach this matter wisely.

Danger of acidotic crisis

It must be pointed out that following a diet in accordance with the rules is actually not as easy as it might seem. You have to endure hunger and thirst, which is aggravated by the psychological aspect that inevitably occurs when you refuse to replenish your resources.

During a hunger strike, a ketoacidotic crisis occurs - the condition is caused by the fact that the body does not receive either food or water from the outside. The human body will try to obtain resources to support life, using its own reserves. His metabolism changes, chemical reactions begin to take place differently.

The processes that occur during hunger strikes in the body are accompanied by an increase in the level of ketone bodies. Such products are formed due to incomplete breakdown of fats or triglycerides.

When two to five days have passed from the start of the hunger strike, your health noticeably worsens. The crisis is especially pronounced in the first attempts to cleanse the body with hunger. It is for this reason that a person feels severe weakness, lack of air and nausea - signs of intoxication of the body. In especially severe cases, pain begins.

Those people who are seriously interested in periodic hunger strikes claim that such crises become less pronounced with each subsequent time. This happens when ketone bodies are utilized. Little by little their content decreases. Because ketone bodies are energy-rich components, they act as fuel for the production of new amino acids. As a result, slow tissue restoration begins, which ultimately responds favorably to treatment.

How Intermittent Fasting Affects Your Hormones

Intermittent fasting can help you lose weight, but it can also affect your hormones.

This is due to the fact that fat deposits are the body’s way of storing energy (calories).

When you don't eat, your body makes several changes to make stored energy more available.

Examples include changes in nervous system activity, as well as major changes in the levels of several important hormones.

Below are two metabolic changes that occur during fasting (18, 19):

  • Insulin . Insulin levels rise when you eat, and when you fast, they drop sharply. Lower insulin levels promote fat burning.
  • Norepinephrine (norepinephrine) . Your nervous system sends norepinephrine to fat cells, causing it to break down fat into free fatty acids that can be burned for energy.

Interestingly, despite the claims of some who advocate 5-6 meals a day, short-term fasting can speed up fat burning.

Research shows that alternate-day intermittent fasting for 3–12 weeks, as well as for 12–24 weeks, reduces body weight and body fat (20, 21).

However, more research is needed to examine the long-term effects of intermittent fasting.

Another hormone that changes during fasting is human growth hormone (HGH), whose levels can increase fivefold (18, 19).

HGH was once thought to help burn fat faster, but new research suggests it may signal the brain to conserve energy, potentially making it harder to lose weight (22).

By activating a small population of agouti protein-related protein (AgRP) neurons, growth hormone may indirectly increase appetite and decrease energy metabolism.

Summary:

Short-term fasting leads to several changes in the body that promote fat burning. However, rapid increases in growth hormone levels can indirectly reduce energy metabolism and hinder weight loss.

Indications for the diet

Indications for the diet

Dry fasting can be prescribed according to the following indications:

  • Established obesity;
  • Presence of allergic manifestations;
  • Anxiety, depression, neuroses;
  • Trophic ulcers;
  • Infectious diseases, inflammation - such as pneumonia and bronchitis, unwanted processes in the prostate gland, bronchial asthma;
  • Diagnosed infertility;
  • Rheumatoid arthritis, deforming osteochondrosis, ankylosing spondylitis, polyarthritis;
  • Eczema and neurodermatitis, chronic urticaria, psoriasis;
  • Problems with the functioning of the gastrointestinal tract - colitis, peptic ulcer, constipation, chronic enteritis.

When fasting, all the weakest cells in the body are destroyed. Their place is taken by stronger ones. Lack of moisture provokes the release of sick, weak, damaged tissues and cells, all non-viable particles are destroyed. The body ultimately retains the strongest cells that can flawlessly withstand all difficult conditions.

It is on these factors that the healing effect for which abstinence is carried out is based, and rejuvenation occurs. Patients who managed to endure the restrictions confirm improved well-being and increased endurance. Many people, after undergoing therapeutic fasting, note greater clarity of mind and improved performance.

What happens to the body

Since fasting is a strong stress for the body, it must first be prepared for this. The day before the diet, it is recommended to cleanse the intestines. On the first day of hunger, the organs of the gastrointestinal tract contract, so you feel grumbling and a feeling of hunger. This removes all excess water and leftover food.

The body first eats glycogen, which is produced by the liver, and converts it into glucose, which is fed to the brain. The most valuable organs are the brain and heart, so when stressed, the body tries to protect them from negativity and feeds them first. But at the same time, the feeling of hunger increases, the person is irritated by the smells coming from the stove, and apathy appears.
